Here are 10 photos of two metre gauge 2-8-2s plinthed at Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Two more are plinthed at Hanoi and Vinh. AFAIK all four were built in China 1965 - 1974 to a French design.

I have also included photos I took in 2006 at the Furka Mountain Rly of two 2-6-0Ts which had been exported to Vietnam in 1947. They were repatriated to Switzerland in 1990 and returned to steam in 1993.

Two other 2-6-0Ts were also repatriated in 1990. So too were two 0-8-0Ts which had been...

Came across this on a random stroll through You Tube. It's Lisbon tram route 28, at night. Vintage tramcars in daily service, some fierce gradients and impressively rapid hill starts, interlaced trackwork and clearances which make you look at the idea of the WLLR extending back to Welshpool Station .... and wonder what the hell all the fuss is about!

I wonder if the long gone 3'6" gauge Brighton Corporation Tramways sounded anything like this? Hope you enjoy! ...

I'm visiting La Rochelle for a few days in August and I was wondering if there any steam/ heritage railways nearby (up to about an hours drive away). I've found 'Le Train Des Mouettes' at Saujon (has anyone been?) but is there anywhere else?

There was a very extensive network of secondary lines in France of which many were of metre-gauge. The line from Nice to Meyrargues was one of these. The route was over 200 kilometres in length and left the Nice to Digne Line at La Manda near Colomars. The link below takes you to the first of my blog posts on this line:

It has been discussed in other threads about steam locomotives with really loud bark from the exhaust. This record, of the three cylindered german Baureihe 44, is the loudest steam locomotive I have ever heard! The sound is beyond so watch your speakers!

This year's edition of the now "legendary" Plandampf in and around the Werratal south of Eisenach in Germany is planned for 18-20 October. The decision date as to whether enough "subscribers" have contributed to enable the event to go ahead is August 20th.

I had the opportunity to visit here recently. Well worth it if you are in Augsburg or the surrounding area. Dead easy to get to from Munich - (30-45 mins by train then the trams go from either the main or the nearest local station to within a 2 minute walk to the site).

It's a former depot/roundhouse that has become a museum in recent years. It is still mainline connected. It retains a lot of its infrastructure - including the WW2 era air raid shelter (which you can visit)

Società Veneta Ferrovie was one of the names of the old "Società Veneta per l'esercizio ferrovie secondarie", a company that, after the creation of FS state railways in 1905, was left with a collection of non connected branch lines. The metre-gauge Thamshavn Railway is in central Norway south west of Trondheim. It opened in 1908 with British equipment to carry pyrite, a valuable source of sulphur as well as copper and other non-ferrous metals, from mines at Lokken to the port of Thamshavn for smelting and shipment. The railway also carried passengers and general freight. All traffic finished by 1974, but since 1983 it has operated as a heritage line.
